Short answer

The door: if its construction does not communicate how it is used, the error is programmed into it and will recur for most users.

1. Position

Norman works as a cognitive scientist and design theorist. His contribution consists in carrying concepts from the psychology of perception into an applied discipline.

2. Error as defect

The central claim: if users systematically make the same mistake, the cause lies in the object. This moves blame from person to construction and makes error measurable.

3. Affordance

The key concept describes properties of an object that suggest a possible way of handling it. A flat plate implies pushing, a handle pulling; a conflict between these signals produces error.

4. A refinement of the concept

He later clarified that perceived rather than physical affordance matters more for design. What counts is not what an object permits but what a user believes possible.

5. The signifier

To remove confusion he introduced a separate concept for explicit cues: labels, arrows, markers. An affordance exists objectively; a signifier communicates it.

6. Mapping

The relation between the arrangement of controls and of controlled objects determines the number of errors. Hob burners and their knobs are the canonical example of poor mapping.

7. Feedback

A system must report that an action has registered. An absent response produces repeated pressing and a subsequent error — a described and reproducible mechanism.

8. Constraint

Construction can physically preclude an incorrect action: a connector that fits one way only removes the question of instruction. This is the most reliable form of design protection.

9. The conceptual model

A user builds an idea of how a device works and acts according to it. The designer’s task is to make that idea coincide with the actual mechanism.

10. The door as example

The example of a door with misleading cues became proverbial and entered professional language. A good example distributes a theory further than an exposition.

11. Human-centred design

He formalised an approach in which requirements are derived from observing users. The method became an industry standard in digital development.

12. Critique of his own approach

He himself noted that human-centredness applied literally leads to improving the existing rather than reconsidering the task. That is an honest limitation of the method.

13. The emotional component

In later work he added that objects are judged by more than efficiency: attractiveness affects tolerance of difficulty. This refines rather than cancels the earlier claim.

14. What transfers

The vocabulary transfers. Affordance, signifier, mapping, feedback, and constraint are five concepts allowing construction to be discussed without appeal to taste.

15. What does not transfer

The priority of clarity over everything else does not transfer. There are categories in which difficulty is the content: games, ritual, learning.

16. Critique

A justified objection: the approach optimises the existing and generates the new poorly. Observing users gives no answer where a practice does not yet exist.

17. A second objection

The concept of affordance is borrowed from ecological psychology and lost part of its original meaning in applied use. Terminological imprecision here is widespread and acknowledged.

His vocabulary underlies contemporary interface design practice. Most professional disputes in that field are conducted in his terms.
